National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has accused President Akufo-Addo of exercising bad judgment in forwarding the petition seeking the impeachment of the EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei.

Agitations had emerged from employees of the electoral commission who were calling for the impeachment of the EC boss on grounds of a breach of Procurement Law.

In a six-page document, the employees alleged among other things, that Madam Osei singularly acquired a V8 Land Cruiser and awarded million dollar contracts without recourse to the laid down administrative structures.

Subsequently, Mrs. Osei through her lawyers on July 21, 2017, in a 17-page document, described the claims as baseless. A few days after receiving the petition, President Akufo-Addo referred the petition to the Chief Justice as stipulated by the constitution.

Osei alongside her two deputies, Amadu Sulley (in charge of Operations), and Georgina Amankwa (in charge of Corporate Services), was to face a probe after all three top EC officials appeared individually before the Chief Justice in the company of their lawyers, at the

office of the Judicial Service located at the Supreme Court on Monday, December 11.

However, after the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo opened a formal probe into the allegations against the EC chair, Charlotte Osei said she didn’t receive a copy of the petition against her.

The embattled EC boss wrote to president Nana Akufo-Addo demanding an official copy of the petition seeking her removal.

She also wrote to the Judicial Council acknowledging the invitation to appear before the Committee to preside over her possible impeachment proceedings. She also demanded a copy of the petition, as well as the composition of the of the committee, constituted.

But responding to her demands, the presidency said that lawyers for Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, erred in writing to the Flagstaff House to demand copies of the petition seeking her impeachment.

Director of Communications at the Flagstaff House, Eugene Arhin also wondered why the embattled EC boss would approach the seat of government for a copy.

This political circus, seemingly far from its closure has drawn the attention of political bigwigs in the society; with mixed reactions massively following.

For Sam George, Nana Addo has been found wanting for exercising bad judgment in forwarding the petition.

Speaking to Citi News, he said that the petition against the EC boss had emanated from faceless personalities and in that case, is labeled as frivolous.

The Ningo-Prampram MP also called to mind an exemplary act exhibited by late Attah Mills in a similar case involving the then Chief Justice Georgina Wood.

He explained that late Mills showed exemplary leadership when he did not act on a petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice, Georgina Wood, over the purchase of some state lands.

While some sympathized with the embattled EC boss, other prominent stakeholders played the devil’s advocate in the ongoing controversy.

Rather than being factual, leader and founder of All People’s Congress (APC), Dr. Hassan Ayariga mocked and jeered at the EC boss, suggesting that her predicaments are as a result of the ill-treatment she meted towards him prior to the 2016 elections.

Ayariga who was disqualified by Madam Charlotte Osei prior to the 2016 elections reminded Charlotte Osei that ‘’what goes around comes around’’.

He also rejected the ejects the assertion of the opposition party that the NPP is witch hunting the embattled commissioner.
