Majority Leader Skeptical Gov’t Would Fulfill All Promises In 4 Years

The Majority Leader in Parliament and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed skepticism about government’s ability to fulfill all its promises within the spate of four years.

The Akufo-Addo-led government that came into power on the back of many catchy campaign promises has come under pressure to deliver on those promises which include ‘One-District, One-Factory, $1 million per constituency, the Ghana Card and more.

Granting an exclusive interview to TV3, the Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency and one of the longest-serving MPs in Parliament said government will do its best to fulfill its promises but cannot guarantee all promises will be fulfilled within the first tenure of office.

Speaking to specific government projects and deadlines, which many have accused government of missing, the legislator said some of the promises were misconstrued by the public.

He cited, for instance, that the promise of 51 factories in the first year in office did not mean the 51 factories will start operating.

“Some of the promises that we have alluded to that he said by close of the year about 51 factories would have started, what do we mean by start, would it mean it would have been constructed? Certainly, that is not the import of it,” he explicated.

“When government says by close of year 51 [factories] would have started, it didn’t say would have started production. You in your mind you are considering that when they say that, you should see production and yet that is not the case.”

The leader of the majority side of Parliament said much of the preliminary works would be done this term for full implementation in subsequent years.

“By the close of four years of Akufo-Addo’s regime, certainly we must see something concrete, either they have started production or in advanced stages, about nearing completions to start production in earnest, so that by God’s grace we last eight years at least we should have the spread out of these factories”.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also denied knowledge of President Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, being called “King Promise” on social media.

The President had unofficially earned the name ‘King Promise’ on social media for what many describe as a man who makes a lot of promises.

But the Majority Leader said the name must have been coined by critics and does not represent the perception of the Ghanaian population.

“I want to imagine that the ‘King Promise’ title that you’re saying, I have not heard it,” he stated, “[it] would have been manufactured by one of the critics and because maybe it is musical to you, you are quoting it to me,” he suggested.

He expressed optimism that the NPP government will be able to impact lives.

“I am hopeful that government will do its best to register its presence in the lives of this country.”
