Former President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the governing National Patriotic Party and the Ghana Police Service for the manner in which the arrest of the NDC Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho was conducted.

In a facebook post, the former president questions the actions of the government as against what it preaches.

He wrote, “As a party that prides itself in the non-criminalization of speech, with a self-acclaimed human rights activist as President, the arrest of K. Anyidoho with armed men in the middle of a press event is obviously disproportionate”.

The deputy general secretary of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho , was on March 27 picked up by police at the Ghana International Press Center for some comments he made which were deemed treasonable. Koku had earlier said the President, Nana Akufo-Addo would suffer the fate of his father who was ousted in 1972 in a military coup.

He has since been charged for treason and denied bail.

John Mahama also condemned the police for the manner in which they responded to the sympathizers of the deputy general secretary who thronged the police headquarters to support him.

“Moreso, the high-handed police response to innocent citizens waiting at the CID HQ is condemnable”.

The police have reportedly fired warning shot and sprayed hot water at the sympathizers who attempted to have access to the police headquarters leading to many sustaining injuries.

Meanwhile, the former President has also declared his support for the Ghana First Patriotic Front demonstration which seeks to protest and overturn the ratification of the US-Ghana defense cooperation agreement.

The controversially ratified agreement would allow the US to establish what many have deemed a military base in the country.
