According to the Head of Communications at the EC, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, the commission disqualified those aspirants based on law.

He spoke on Adom FM’s Burning Issues programme hosted by Afia Pokua after the Electoral Commission (EC) rejected the nominations of 12 presidential hopefuls in the upcoming December polls.

Chairperson of the Commission, Charlotte Osei said the disqualified aspirants did not meet the criteria for filing as president.

The rejected political parties are; Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD), Progressive People’s Party (PPP), and the Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP).

The rest include; United Front Party (UFP), All People’s Congress (APC), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Convention (PNC), United Development System Party (UDSP), Democratic People’s Party (DPP) the Independent People’s Party (IPP), and Alfred Kwame Walker, Independent candidate.

A thirteenth candidate, Akwasi Addai ‘Odike’ of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has up till October 14, 2016 to sort out a legal matter affecting his legitimacy as leader of the party.

Four presidential candidates who successfully scaled the Commission’s checks are the flagbearers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama; Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet; and an independent candidate, Jacob Yeboah.

The All People’s Congress (APC) led by Hassan Ayariga together with other candidates has indicated that it will seek redress in court over their disqualification.

The National Executive Committee of APC in a statement issued on Monday October 10, and signed by the General Secretary of the party, Razak Kojo Opoku described the EC’s reasons for its disqualification as “bogus”.

But the head of Communications at the EC, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu says the commission did nothing wrong and it is ready for any possible legal battle.
