Outgoing President John Mahama will this Thursday, January 5, 2017, deliver his final State of the Nation address to Parliament. The final State of the Nation address is in fulfillment of Article 67 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution which states that the President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before a dissolution of Parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation.

The address was earlier slated for Thursday, December 22, 2016, but was later postponed because Parliament’s Business Statement made no provision for the address at that time.

According to the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, Kate Addo in an interview with Citi News, minutes after the life of the 6th parliament stands is dissolved, the next one is activated by the inauguration ceremony which will take place on the midnight of the 7th.

The outgoing President who has given a hint of his plans after handover, recently said he would take a long break from political activities. According to Mahama, he will subsequently be engaged in sub-regional, continental and global matters.

Vice President Mahama became Ghana’s President on July 24 2012, following the death of the then president John Atta Mills, which occurred that same year. Mahama subsequently won the December 2012 general election, where he beat his rival Nana Addo, now President-elect.
