They described her as a dedicated and professional public servant and politician who contributed to the development of the country, especially in the health sector and the protection of the rights of children, girls and women.

Reading a tribute, the MP for Tamale South, Mr Haruna Iddrisu said Dr (Mrs) Grant lived a worthy life and indicated that she made the health of infants and children her main priority.

Besides, he said she was supportive of higher medical standards in the health sector.

Mr Iddrisu said Dr (Mrs) Grant led Ghana’s delegation to many conferences and impacted the knowledge she acquired at such conferences.

“She was a dedicated and professional public servant and she lived a worthy life. Her professionalism in politics remains an inspiration for the girl-child,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu said it was in recognition of her contribution that the government conferred the country’s highest national honour Companion of the Order of the Volta (Civil Division) on her.

Positions

Dr (Mrs) Grant, a former member of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), died on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the 37 Military Hospital. She was 88.

She was the first Wesley Girls High School alumnus to become a medical doctor and was appointed Deputy Secretary of Health in 1985 in the Jerry John Rawlings-led PNDC regime.

She was also a deputy minister of Health at a time and a minister of Education and Culture.

Leadership

The Deputy Majority Leader, Mr Alfred Kwame Agbesi described Dr (Mrs) Grant as an illustrious woman.

He said although she belonged to one political party, she did not shun the company of other parties.

“She was a mother to all irrespective of political affiliation,” he said.

Mr Agbesi said Dr (Mrs) Grant was a woman who all women looked up to and stressed the need for girls to be taught to emulate her example.

The Minority Chief Whip, Mr Dan Botwe, said Dr (Mrs) Grant was a politician, but still kept her values.

He said she encouraged women to go into politics, saying “she lived an exemplary life.”

Other contributions

The MP for Nandom, Dr Benjamin Kunbuor, said Dr (Mrs) Grant’s advice guided him when he was the Minister of Health.

“She helped public office and all must celebrate her,” he said.

The MP for Nhyiaeso, Dr Richard Anane said looking at what she did in her life, it gave an indication that she was a woman who came to serve.

He said she promoted equal opportunity for girls and women.

Other MPs said Dr (Mrs) Grant’s contributions permeated all sectors of the country and added that she would remain in the hearts of Ghanaians for what she stood for in politics.
