The special mop-up exercise to allow early voters who could not exercise their franchise in the special voting on December 1, 2016 recorded a low turnout in the Tema West and East constituencies, reports Della Russel Ocloo.

Of the 880 registered special voters, 311 were supposed to have cast their ballot at the Tema West but as at 2:40 pm, a handful of 45 people had voted.

The situation was not different from Tema East where out of the 652 registered special voters, some 220 who are to have voted on Sunday, only 36 officers voted as at 3:30 pm.

The boring nature of the exercise has thus seen majority of the electoral officers and political party agents sleeping on duty.

A common feature of missing names was also prominent as most officers who had previously visited the centres on the Day One of the exercise could still not trace their names in the register.

At Tema West where two registers had been displayed for the purposes of cross-checking missing names, the Returning Officer, Mr Mathew Pius Oppong explained to the Graphic Online that officials were still using the same registers used for the last Thursday exercise since the headquarters of the Electoral Commission did not effect any changes.

He said that beyond the statement that was issued by the EC on the second round of voting, no other correction was done on the register.

The Returning Officer for the Tema East constituency, Mr Samuel Jerry Ankomah also expressed similar sentiments and appealed to officers whose names were still missing to check from their mother polling centers on December 7.
