A lot of anomalies rocked the special voting exercise which took place yesterday, at designated polling centres across the country.

From missing names to reports of multiple names on register; Ghana’s Electoral Commission received tons of complaints from various stakeholders in the course of the exercise.

About 127,000 voters made up of media, security personnel and electoral officials; who will be engaged on December 7 for various duties, were expected to cast their ballot in the special voting.

However, hundreds of them -mainly security officers, could not cast their ballot because their names were missing on the list of special voters. Scores of security personnel including the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Peterkin Yentumi, could not find their names on the register.

EC had said it would not take the blame for the challenges as the affected voters did not vote at the polling stations where they registered. This had caused anxiety among the officers who feared they could be disenfranchised in this year’s general elections.

More agitations had ensued following EC’s declaration that those unable to vote on the set date, had automatically lost the opportunity to vote.

The EC however, had a change of heart following massive complaints regarding the exclusion of names of many security officers from the list. The Commission on Thursday; at an emergency IPAC meeting, decided to go for a second round of voting on Sunday December 4, to afford the affected officers the last opportunity.

The EC has said that anyone who misses the opportunity on Sunday, will not be able to vote on December 7 -the main election day.

Special voting platform was provided by law, to allow registered voters who would not be present themselves at the polling stations -due to the role they play in the elections, to vote on a date prior to the day of general voting.
