EC Has Refused To Point Out Our Errors As SC Directed

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) says the Electoral Commission (EC) has refused to point errors on its nomination forms, despite apex court’s ruling to the contrary.

PPP General Secretary, Murtala Mohammed said they have been at the Commission’s office for more than four hours waiting to be told of their errors but nothing has been said to them.

“They [EC] have handed a letter to us re-echoing Supreme Court’s ruling and there is a paragraph down there saying we should correct all other infractions on the form,” he told Raymond Acquah, host of Joy FM’s Top Story programme Monday.

Ghana’s apex court has ordered the EC to give an opportunity to all the 13 disqualified presidential candidates to make corrections on their nomination forms.

The ruling was in response to a review application filed at the Supreme Court (SC) by the EC after an Accra High Court ruled that disqualification of PPP presidential candidate, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom was unfair and ordered he should be made to correct errors on his forms.

The EC wanted SC to review the ruling of the lower court, but on Monday the apex court upheld the ruling of the lower court.

By the ruling, all 13 presidential candidates whose nominations were rejected by the EC on October 10 have a chance to get onto the ballot.

EC’s lawyer, Thaddeus Sory, described the ruling of the highest court as significant to Ghana’s democracy.

But PPP’s General Secretary said contrary to the ruling, the EC has refused to point out the errors on the party’s nomination form for the corrections to be effected.

“The orders of the SC was clear that point out the errors but you are saying we should go and correct all the errors but the EC has refused to communicate to us,” he said.

EC Deputy Communication Director, Yussif Ayuba who spoke to Joy News on the issue explained he was not aware of the challenges encountered by PPP.

“What I am aware is that Supreme Court ordered EC to call all the 13 political parties and candidates who did not correct their forms,” he said, adding all the candidates have by 5 p.m. Tuesday to effect those changes on their forms.

He disclosed that after SC’s ruling nine presidential candidates have come for their nomination forms.
