Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, a former Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister of State under the erstwhile ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor’s government, has urged the Mahama-led government to take a second look at the laws governing appointment of government officials and heads of key institutions of state.
According to the former Minister for Defense, Ghana needs to introduce transparency and accountability checks since this is a democratic country in our governance process.
He stated that unlike other democratic nations where means of electing officials are processed through transparent measures, Ghana operates an opaque system.
“Every Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Auditor General knows that when its government loses power in the Ghanaian system, they automatically lose their posts too. So to what extent can you expect these people to be neutral during elections?
“In other democratic countries, there are ways of electing these officials which portrays transparency through several measures. But with the process here in Ghana, every single member of the state is appointed by the government. We need to amend these laws” he declared on Accra based Neat FM.
“If we want a new EC commissioner the sitting government does that, and this year, the sitting president appointed the referee to the presidential match which makes it unfair. It is not the fault of the Government to do that but that of our constitution.
“As we go ahead, we as citizens need to realize that system is not good enough In a democracy where checks and balances don’t work, it’s much worse than a military dictatorship. And that should always be at the back of our mind” he stressed.
