The Black Stars needed to defeat Congo in Kumasi to spark hopes of reaching the tournament in Brazil; but a 1-1 draw by Congo on Friday, September 1 ruined their chance of qualifying.

However, while Ghanaians are still dealing with the disappointing results at the recent Congo clash in Kumasi, another troubling news follows.

Ghana’s hope of securing a victory in the return leg on September 5, in Brazzaville, Congo has been severely punctured with news that two key players of the team; Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew will be absent at the game.

It has been reported that Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, and deputy, Andre Ayew will not take part in the  World Cup qualifier against Congo in Brazzaville on Tuesday, having picked up injuries in the previous match.

The duo did not last the full duration of last Friday’s disappointing stalemate at the Baba Yara Stadium with Gyan replaced in the 62nd minute by Thomas Agyepong, while Ayew was substituted six minutes later.

It can be recalled that the two players were taken off in the second half and it has now been revealed that they were both injured. Gyan hurt his groin while Andre Ayew picked up a thigh injury.

The injuries will see the two stars observe the Black Stars in Brazzaville, from the touchlines; just like the rest of the team officials.

A clear proof to back this report is the absence of the aforementioned players at training on Sunday, September 3. The duo was not part of the team’s training on Sunday morning. Ayew sat on the bench while his teammates went through their paces, but Gyan was not present.

The Black Stars captain was set to undergo a scan on Saturday but it is assumed that the degree of the injury will not allow him to play in Tuesday’s return leg.

Black Stars in Brazzaville: How Crucial Is Congo Return Leg

It will only take a win in the return leg in Brazzaville, Congo for Ghana to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Ghana is in danger of not qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2002, after they were held to the 1-1 draw by their Congolese counterparts on Friday, September 1.

The Black Stars were hoping for a home win to close in on Group E leaders Uganda but Bifouma Thievy handed the visitors a surprise lead before Thomas Partey equalized five minutes from time.

Dropping points at the crucial stage of the World Cup Qualifiers was indeed a disappointment to the team, more especially Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah. But Mr. Appiah hopes to secure a win despite the odds.

The crucial nature of this match has revived talks pertaining to suspended players KP Boateng and Sulley Muntari.
