The General Secretary of the Electricity Corporation of Ghana Senior Staff Union says the ECG is yet to formally receive information about a fine imposed by the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission.

Patrick Binyemi said apart from snippets of information they have picked from the media about the supposed fine, the regulatory body has yet to formally write to them.

The PURC imposed a GH¢202, 640.00 fine on the electricity distributor as punishment for a recent strike action by the workers which prevented customers from purchasing credits for their prepaid meters.

The action by the workers was in protest over the planned privatization of ECG by government.

But the PURC is unhappy about the action which it said negatively affected customers and has decided to sanction the management of the ECG.

A statement signed by the Director of Communications of the PURC Nana Yaa Jantuah said the ECG must pay the penalty by close of Friday September 16, 2016.

“Failure by the ECG to comply with this order shall attract an additional GH¢10,000 for each non-compliance order,” the statement warned.

In a reaction on Joy News Patrick Binyemi said the management of ECG will respond accordingly if they formally receive information about the fine.

He was quick to add that the action to go on strike was rather in the larger interest of all Ghanaians and not to punish them.

The fine is a new twist to the drama between the ECG and PURC on one hand and the ECG and Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) on another.

MiDA and government are championing the privatization of ECG with the search for a concessionaire to manage affairs of the ECG.

The staff of ECG are worried about a clause in the sale agreement that only guarantees their job security for only a period of five years.

They are worried that after five years the new managers of ECG will dispense with their services.
