This is a message for any boss, manager, CEO or leader that has occupied a leadership position for some years.
If after a few years, you have not yet identified a successor, then you are duty bound to start looking for a potential (in some cases two or more) to groom for your role and seat.
If you don’t have confidence in the people around you after say…three to five years in any organisation, then as a LEADER, you must begin to look for your successor and teach them LEADERSHIP by example.
Take nothing for granted in this unpredictable, demanding and pressure-laden world. So PREPARE…PREPARE…PREPARE!
You may hold onto your position for another few years (by contract, appointment, vote or inheritance) or for just a few more months. But if you accept that one day there will be change, then YOU must make an input towards that change.
A leader’s responsibility to prepare for any eventuality also means grooming others to lead in the event of his or her absence in any eventually.
For many, the hardest thing about LEADERSHIP is the fear or inability to groom someone to become better than you especially when it all seems so good at the top.
Don’t let complacency, selfishness, greed or your fears hold you back. It is never too late to share the secrets of your success and leave a LEGACY.
Let your fears rather lead you to action NOW towards a better you for others to draw inspiration from.
