Subin MP Calls For CID Probe Into Police, KTI Clash

The Member of Parliament for the Subin Constituency, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has called investigations into the alleged police brutality meted out to students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI).

According to the MP, a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) inquest into the matter will unravel the truth and reveal the perpetrators in the matter, whilst ultimately preventing a recurrence of such incidents.

In February, scores of students of KTI were injured after clashing with police personnel in the Ashanti region with 45 of them admitted to the Anwiam Clinic in Kumasi.

The violence erupted after a zonal inter-school sports competition at the Baba Yara stadium.

Police fired gunshots and teargas to disperse the angry students who were said to have resisted the Police attempt to calm the situation by pelting stones.

About 37 students of KTI were also detained by the Police after the clash.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, Eugene Boakye Antwi admitted the need for police intervention, but said police personnel went too far with their handling of the situation.

“The conduct of the students was reprehensible and needed to be stopped. Notwithstanding, the high-handed approach by the police service is most regrettable and must be condemned. The unreasonable use of teargas, live bullets in controlling the students, who on the appearance of the police had started running for their dear lives, is most unfortunate.”

Without taking sides, Mr. Boakye Antwi called for calm from the authorities of KTI and the police service, and urged the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct “a comprehensive investigation into the unfortunate occurrence.”

“This investigation will obviously help us to unearth the real antecedents to the unfortunate happenings of Tuesday, February 14, 2017, and thereby grant us enough grounds to for proper solutions to guide us not to find ourselves again in this unfortunate situation,” he said.
