Stop the Blame Game – Portuphy Warns NDC Members

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Portuphy, has warned party members against publicly blaming one another for the party’s defeat in the 2016 election.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Portuphy instead urged party members and executives to use internal structures to voice out their grievances.

“Those who are going to the radio stations to make statements that are not in keeping with the norms of our party should desist from doing so. Let’s mind our own business. Let’s meet at our branches, constituencies and nationally to resolve our problems.”

“The leadership of the party abhors individuals going onto stations and making all kinds of remarks. I want to warn that nobody must go on the radio station and attack each other. We should use our own systems constituted by our party to seek redress,” Mr. Portphy advised.

The week following the NDC’s loss election saw an internal blame game emerge following what has been described as a humiliating defeat.

The most notable of these accusations saw the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the NDC, Anthony Nukpenu, blame the party’s founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, for contributing to the party’s loss because he is viewed to have publicly painted the party as corrupt.

President John Mahama became the first incumbent to lose a re-election bid after a first term, as the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Flagbearer won the December presidential polls with 53.85% of the total valid votes cast, against the President Mahama’s 44.40%.

This is the worst defeat to have been recorded by a sitting President in Ghana’s elections.
