The National Democratic Party (NDP) is kicking against invitation by the Progressive People’s Party to form an alliance ahead of the 2020 general elections.
The PPP in at a news conference on Monday announced the party’s resolve to merge with other political parties and pressure groups to break the duopoly of the NPP and NDC.
“After careful consideration, the party wishes to invite like-minded progressive political parties and individuals to discuss and reach agreement to forge an alternative to the NPP and the NDC to contest election 2020 and beyond” the party’s chairman Nii Allotey Brew Hammond said.
But speaking with 3FM News, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Alhaji Frimpong argues that the call points to a frustrated party.
“What we are hearing from the PPP sounds just like frustration over the pace of our democracy. And of course they are moaning a serious pitfall in our constitutional democracy.
“…it is an expression of frustration, but it is not logical that when you go into alliance you can then look at some of the impediment that are deep down in our system”.
He added, “the governance that we live brings about what we term as oligarchy most of the time, in other words our mandate that we exercise in electing a government finally lands into a pit trap for four years and the electorates become helpless in matters that affect democracy.”
Meanwhile, other political parties like the PNC, have fully embraced the idea of the alliance as proposed by the PPP.
