Director of Operations for the election taskforce of the Ghana Police, Chief Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Agordzor says his outfit will soon invite NDC Communications Director for Asunafo South in the Brong Ahafo Region, Derrick Nii Lokko to assist the police with details of his claim that over 250 guns are in possession of both NPP and NDC supporters in the constituency.
Derrick Nii Lokko has stated that supporters of the two biggest political parties in the country, NDC and NPP are hoarding over 250 guns for self-defense ahead of this year’s general elections.
“Over 250 guns are currently in the possession of both NDC and NPP supporters. Most of the people in the area are having sophisticated ammunitions such as pump action guns in their custody” Nii Lokko told host of Adom FM’s current affairs programme “Burning Issues” while speaking on the recent happenings in the constituency.
The residents’ fears follow recent violent clashes between some supporters of NDC and NPP after the office of the NPP in the area was invaded by men believed to be supporters of the governing NDC.
The Electoral Commission (EC) was forced to suspend the voter transfer exercise at Kukuom following the clashes which led to an official sustaining cutlass wounds.
The Asunafo South EC office was also ransacked by the unidentified men.
The situation has been brought under control by the security agencies in the area but the political parties, traditional authorities and residents are not completely convinced about their safety and are apparently arming themselves.
Chief Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Agordzor says the police will invite Mr Lokko to provide more information about his allegations as well as assist the police to retrieve those ammunition to ensure that peace prevails in the Region before, during and after the election.
