A private legal practitioner has indicated that the Ghana Police Service can go ahead and investigate the recent bribery allegations leveled against President John Mahama and his brother rather than wait for a complaint to be lodged with them.
The President of the Republic and his brother have been accused of attempting to bribe the Northern Region Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, with a V6 Mitsubishi and a V8 Toyota Land Cruiser and monies of GH¢3.3 million and GH¢ 500,000.
Although the NDC has denied these allegations, the NPP is insisting that they have evidence to prove their claim.
They have also challenged the companies mentioned in their accusation – Malin Investment Company Limited, which is believed to be owned by Ibrahim Mahama – to come out to deny that they transferred the vehicle to Mr. Bugri Naabu.
Speaking on Accra-based radio station Citi FM, practicing lawyer and lecturer at the Central University Law Faculty, Yaw Oppong indicated that “I think that in modern times the police don’t need a report from someone before investigating such allegations.
“These are serious allegations and the police can go ahead to invite the persons mentioned in the accusation. I mean they invite them all the time so they should just go ahead.
“They should not only invite those accused in the allegations but also those making the allegations too… to provide evidence etc.”
