Currently, the five victims and their relatives are putting up with colleague officers.

The deceased’s mother, lance corporal Rebecca Awuakye  and her five-year-old girl who are being sheltered in a senior police officers’ bungalow, are being counseled by clinical psychologist and a pastor.

The two-month-old baby was left in the room by her mother to attend to nature’s call about 50 metres away from the barracks when their room caught fire at about 3:30pm Sunday.

Four other rooms were affected by the fire which was said to have started from one of the rooms which have been partitioned by about 60 per cent of plywood; something that fueled the fire to spread easily.

Properties worth millions of Ghana cedis, mostly personal effects of the victims, were destroyed in the fire. Investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Afeku who visited the victims Monday to commiserate with them assured them of the necessary support to get back to their normal lives, noting they will be given social intervention.

He was accompanied by the Kassena Nankana East Police Commander.

The issue of police accommodation in the Upper East Region, just like all other regions, has become a major challenge for the Police administration which, DCOP Afeku said will be a topic for discussion in an upcoming meeting of Police Commanders in Accra.

DCOP Afeku conveyed the condolences of the acting IGP and the entire Police Service to the family Cpl. Awuakye and the other victims.

Cpl. Awuakye thanked the police commander for his good gestures.
