The National Service Scheme (NSS) has partnered with Melchia Investments Ghana Limited (MIGL), a waste management firm, to tackle waste in Ghana using technology in the National Waste Bin Distribution Project (NaWaBin).
Explaining how the technology will work while speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Monday April 10, Ernest Adade, Head, Geographical Information System (GIS) Operations for NaWaBin, said new modern bins referred to as smart bins would be distributed under the project with RF ID cards installed on those bins.
These RF ID smart cards, he said, would communicate to the driver of the truck and inform him about where there are bins that are full but are yet to be collected.
“That will make it easier to locate the bins and pick them up swiftly,” he said.
Speaking on this project on the same programme, Ambrose Entsiwah Jnr explained that in 2015, the NSS, in accordance with Section 3(1) of the Ghana National Service Scheme Act, 1980 (Act 426), introduced a new module in the area of urban sanitation, and accordingly deployed national service personnel into the NaWaBin project.
He added the project is an initiative that acknowledges the important role of multiple stakeholders including the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) and private sector organisations.
He added that it was in response to the need for good solid waste storage to complement an efficient collection system that Melchia Investment Ghana Limited has come on board with the technology to deal with the sanitation problem effectively.
