The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has turned down an invitation to a debate, organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), for presidential candidates contesting the general elections. The party says it is already preoccupied with a lot of equally important things and would not sacrifice any for the debate.

The said debate slated for today; will see presidential candidates of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), People’s National Convention (PNC), Convention People’s Party (CPP), National Democratic Party (NDP), National Democratic Congress (NDC) and independent candidate, Joseph Osei Yeboah, on the platform.

Deputy General Secretary of the NPP Nana Obiri Boahene, who spoke to the media concerning the party’s rejection of the debate, said the party would not put much premium on the debate. He explained that the NPP has other programmes and activities for the year and would not compromise on any, for the NCCE debate. Despite the seeming weirdness surrounding the issue, the major opposition party has insisted it will not participate in the debate.

This simply means that the debate will feature only Flagbearers of the aforementioned parties, alongside independent candidate Joseph Osei Yeboah. The NCCE indicated that the objective of the exercise, is to provide a platform where the candidates will shed light on their policies and programmes to Ghanaians, to enable the electorates make informed decisions on December 7.

NPP’s rejection of the debate, is sure to be very disappointing to a large section of Ghanaians, whom have long anticipated a debate involving Flagbearers of major contending parties; NDC’s President Mahama and NPP’s Nana Addo.

Expectations of a Nana Addo and Mahama debate heightened, after the President earlier expressed his desire to have a one-on-one debate with the NPP Flagbearer, to discuss issues surrounding his term of office.
