The National organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of betraying former President, John Mahama by fueling the just ended controversy over his request for a retirement home. Kofi Adams says the governing party had granted Mahama’s request to keep the Cantonments residence, but publicly denied it during the heated controversy.

The NDC loyalist said this while speaking on Citi Eyewitness news, regarding the trending Bungalow controversy. Kofi Adams explained that the two transition sides -NDC and NPP, were fully aware of Mahama’s request to keep his cantonments residence. He pointed out that, the NPP team had agreed in the presence of some witnesses for Mahama to keep the government bungalow as his retirement home.

It was then he continued, that the ex President was asked to write formally, to request for the property as was done in a December 19th letter signed by former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah on behalf of the President. Mr Adams said the NPP betrayed Mahama during the buzzing uproar, by suggesting he wrote the letter of his own accord.

Mahama’s request to keep his official residence; Bungalow No.3, Prestige Link, Cantonents, Accra, had caused an uproar, with many Ghanaians accusing the ex president of trying to keep what was not approved for him by government. This is because it was expected that Mahama would vacate his place of residence, having lost to Nana Addo in the December 2016 elections.

To clarify issues, Mahama had in a subsequent statement, explained that his decision to maintain the state residence he occupied while in office, was approved by the new government led by President Nana Addo. But Nana Addo’s transition team in a rebuttal, said the new government is yet to approve the former president’s request to keep the property, contrary to Mahama’s statement.

However, owing to the escalating controversy, ex president Mahama decided to choose peace over his cantonments residence, by withdrawing his request to keep the property. In a letter addressed to the new government, Mahama said it was important to maintain the cordial relationship between the two transition sides.

Mahama’s withdrawal of his request, has attracted commendations from political stakeholders including President Akufo-Addo. The President while speaking at a thanksgiving service held at Ridgeway Church on Sunday, took out time to commend Mahama for his admirable conduct during the heat of the controversy.

But despite the acknowledgements, Kofi Adam insists that NPP betrayed Mahama by denying its consent to the ex president’s request to keep his official residence.
