The Inspector -General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has hinted that the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the police will undergo intensive screening and retraining to enable personnel to work diligently to win the public confidence.

He explained that if the MTTD personnel on the various highways and roads continued to exhibit a low level of professionalism, it would be difficult to improve the image of the police.

Mr Asante-Apeatu said this at the closing ceremony of the Junior Command Course Seven of the year at the Ghana Police Command and Staff College, Winneba, yesterday.

During the five-week course, 53 students, made up of 10 female and 43 male officers, were taken through practical modules including crime prevention strategies, intelligence management, service writing, cybercrime.

“l have directed a nationwide internal recruitment, screening and retraining of all personnel who will constitute the MTTD.

“ When this is done, l expect nothing but world-class police officers who serve all road users and add more value to the image of the police service,” he stated.

Face of police

The IGP noted, “the MTTD is the face of the police service, therefore I urge you to remain committed to discharging your duties to make the police service a world-class police.”

He stressed that poor corporate image was a serious de-motivator and had a lingering demoralising effect on the hardworking personnel who worked round the clock to ensure that the nation enjoyed modicum of peace and security.

Mr Asante -Apeatu urged the police personnel to exhibit more professionalism in the discharge of their duties to improve the corporate image of the Police Service, adding that he expected the traffic department to deal decisively with recalcitrant and reckless road users.

Assurance

The IGP assured Ghanaians that the Police Service would remain committed to enforcing road traffic regulations without fear or favour.

According to him, there would be continued capacity building to enhance the administrative and managerial skills of the police to inculcate the spirit of teamwork, good networking and standardisation of writing in the service.

He further assured the personnel that he would explore all avenues to alleviate the difficulties personnel encountered and consistently pursue policies that would seek their interest and welfare.

Capacity building

The commandant of the Ghana Police Command and Staff College of Winneba, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP), Dr Sayibu Pabi Gariba, urged the trainees to work tirelessly to improve the image of the Police Service in order to win the public trust.

He encouraged them to carry out their duties with humility as well as implementing the knowledge they had acquired.

Dr Gariba commended the authorities of the University of Education, Winneba for their immense support in the various capacity building and other collaborated courses.

Assistant Superintended of Police (ASP), Peter Toobu, who was the Overall Best Student and the senior student of the Junior Command Course Seven, on behalf of the graduates, appreciated the police administration for the opportunity given them to enhance their capacities as a way of contributing to the collective building of the service.
