Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government have commended Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL) for its operations at the Lavender Hill Waste Treatment Plant at Korle Gonno in Accra.

Chairperson of the committee, Mrs. Patricia Appiagyei, made the commendation when her outfit visited the faecal treatment plant at the weekend.

The visit, which came off on Friday, April 07, 2017, afforded the committee members the opportunity to familiarise themselves with operations of the septage treatment plant, and also see how best they can help them enhance their work.

According to Mrs. Appiagyei, her committee was ‘highly impressed’ with the work at the Lavender Hill waste treatment plant “so far just within two-and-a-half-years.”

She, therefore, indicated that government was supporting the project to ensure that there was a proper and efficient way of sewage disposal.

She discouraged the old system of sewage disposal, and urged the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to support SSGL in its operations.

The MPs were later conducted around the facilities at the waste treatment plant.

Earlier, in a welcoming address, Managing Director (MD) of SSGL, Haidar M. Said, disclosed that the plant takes about 26,000 cubic metres of sewage waste on daily basis.

“The plant also treats about 80% of the sewage waste in Accra, while it also receives 200 cesspit trucks a day for treatment,” MD of SSGL further disclosed.

According to him, the Lavender Hill project, which was built on a public private partnership with government, is a long-term one.

It would be recalled that Lavender Hill, a popular liquid waste hub, notoriously known for the dumping of faecal waste into the sea at Korle Gonno, was on November 27, 2016 officially shutdown.

Immediately following the shutdown of Lavender Hill was the commissioning of the Lavender Hill Faecal and Mudor Waste Treatment Plants by former President John Dramani Mahama.

The plants, which are partnership between Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Jospong Group of Companies, and the government of Ghana, are expected to improve upon liquid waste situation in the capital city.

The faecal treatment plant, designed for a life span of 20 years and more, is owned and operated by Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Jospong Group of Companies.

Construction of the US$ 25 million Lavender Hill Faecal Plant began in 2012.

The Septage Treatment Plant with a maximum treatment capacity of 2,400 cu.m/day and a design capacity of 2,000 cu.m/day is unique as there are few plants in the world designed for treating Septage.

The plant, first of its kind in the sub-region, consists of a primary treatment stage which includes screening, primary settling, raw Septage and sludge dewatering.
