The Presidential candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Convention People’s Party’s Ivor Greenstreet, and Jacob Osei Yeboah, an independent candidate, are the only persons who have been qualified by the Electoral Commission, to contest this year’s presidential elections.

The four were cleared by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday [October 10], after their nomination forms were vetted out of the lot.

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei said the candidates had qualified after meeting “the requirements of the electoral laws”.

She made the declaration at a press conference at the EC’s Head Office in Accra, following the closing of payment of filing fees by the presidential and parliamentary candidates of the various parties.

This means that, twelve presidential aspirants, will not be contesting in the elections because according to the EC, all the parties failed to meet certain critical requirements in the filling of the forms.

Ayariga’s APC, PPP, PNC others disqualified from 2016 polls

The thirteen disqualified parties include Hassan Ayariga’s All Progressive Congress (APC), the People’s National Convention (PNC), and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

All the parties were supposed to submit their filing fees by midday today [Monday], after an Accra High court dismissed an injunction suit filed by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in protest against the fees.

The other disqualified parties are the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), the Independent People’s Party (IPP) led by Kofi Akpalu, Democratic People’s Party (DPP), led by Ward Brew, Akua’s Donkor’s Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), and the Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD), led by Kwabena Adjei.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings’ National Democratic Party (NDP), has also been disqualified for the second time. An Independent Candidate, Alfred Asiedu Kwame Walker, has also been disqualified.

Her announcement means that, barring any new development, only four individuals will have their photos printed on the ballot papers on the election day.

They are Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party, and Jacob Osei Yeboah, an independent candidate.
