Immediate past High Commissioner to India, Sam Pee Yalley says some stalwarts in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) could end up in jail if the party begins to probe the whereabouts of campaign funds meant for the 2016 elections.

He alleged that some parliamentary candidates “collected monies in the name of campaigning to retain the party but pocketed the cash and never used it.”

Speaking on Radio Gold current affairs program, Alhaji and Alhaji Saturday, Sam Pee Yalley, who is also a public interest lawyer, said “people squandered the campaign monies thinking that the popularity of the former president Mahama could win him the elections.”

“If we are going to talk about blame I am saying that there are some people who could even go to jail on the account that we gave you this amount of money; how did you spend it?” Sam Pee Yelley questioned.

He added: “I know of parliamentary candidates who were so sure Mahama was going to win and therefore did not use the resources given to them for the campaign. I am telling you, this is one election NDC spent so much money but the money did not go to the grassroots.”

He stressed that he personally made contributions in the form of cash to support the campaign but “some elements within the party collected the money and misused it.”

He also said “those NDC members who squandered the party’s campaign cash are those making noise” in the media over the party’s defeat.

His comment is occasioned by media reports that former president Mahama will soon drop the names of members of the NDC Functional Executive Committee members who went to him for money for the campaign.

According to media reports, Mr. Mahama has been compelled to do so after several reports that some members of the party are accusing him of failing to resource the party hence their defeat at the polls.

Sam Pee Yalley is entreating all aggrieved party members to channel their concerns to the Dr. Kwesi Botchway committee that is investigating the defeat of the NDC in the 2016 presidential elections.
