Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid has strongly defended the huge size of government explaining that it is a way of protecting the public purse.
According to him, the final result is what they are aiming at and not the size of the government.
“The huge size of government is to protect the public purse. The end result is what matters when constituting a government and not the size,” he argued on Adom FM’s Morning Show “Dwaso Nsem” Thursday.
President Akufo-Addo has appointed 110 ministers in total, making his government the biggest in the Fourth Republic.
The previous NPP government led by former President John Kufuor had 88 ministers while the Mills administration that succeeded it had 69 ministerial appointees.
The Mahama administration, however, had 78 ministerial appointments.
Many have since criticized the President for the decision, arguing that this will only burden the public purse considering that, aside the salaries and benefits, all these officials will retire with huge amounts as ex-gratia.
But Sheikh Hamid who believes the move is not a means of bringing a burden on the public purse asked Ghanaians to desist from pre-judging the issue and wait for results.
“We should rather be patience and wait to see that if these ministers will perform before we take any decision” he stressed.
He said the Akufo-Addo-led government inherited a country with a weak economy and therefore requires a strong army that will resolve these challenges.
