Government has started renovation works on the tomb of late President John Atta Mills. This was after Citi Fm drew the attention of the general public to the deteriorating condition of the tomb on Monday, February 27.

The report had had captured pictures of the Atta Mills tomb with some cracks here and there and pieces of blocks being used to hold it in place.

However, government was very quick to respond to the publicity as repair work had already kicked off at the site as early as Tuesday morning. This was revealed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Atta Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho while speaking to Citi News in an interview. According to Mr. Anyidoho,  he was at the Asomdwee Park where the Atta Mills tomb is located on Tuesday morning and saw that renovation work has already commenced.

“I can confirm on authority that I have been there, and I must say that we are pleased with the quick response of government. We saw workers on site. The tombstone was being worked on. It also looks like the lawn itself is being manicured.”

He commended Citi News for drawing government’s attention to the poor condition of the tomb. He also expressed appreciation for government’s quick intervention, saying it has saved the country from potential embarrassment.

“For us, the positive aspect of the story that Citi FM did on Monday is that, some attention has been drawn to what was going to come out as an embarrassment to us.”

Koku Anyidoho further noted that the poor state of the late President’s tomb would have been a source of big disgrace to the country had it been left unattended untill the March 6 Independence Day celebration.

The late Attah Mills tomb was built in form of a bird sanctuary. It is located at west of the Asomdwee Park overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in the legendary Osu Castle .

The Asomdwee Park on its own part, is a presidential cemetery. It used to be a geese park with other tourist attractions such as ostriches and fish ponds, before being transformed to a ground for the burial of late President John Evans Atta Mills who passed away on July 24, 2012.

Aside late President Mills’ grave, there are 10 other potential graves at the park which is located inside the Osu Castle. It was christened “Asomdwee” park in remembrance of the peaceful nature of late President Mills.
