PROGRESSIVE Teachers and Youth Alliance (PROTAYA) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the leadership of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for woefully causing financial loss of GHC120,000 to the association.

According to PROTAYA, despite numerous complaints by the teachers over the illegal deduction of mutual fund money by GNAT without having any agreement with them, the leadership of GNAT has also gone ahead to waste the dues of the teachers.

This illegal practice of executives of the GNAT, PROTAYA stressed, has compelled them to call on government and all teachers to team up and ensure that the leaders of GNAT are arrested and prosecuted.

A statement signed and issued by the leadership of PROTAYA and copied to the media at the weekend noted that the teachers have been suffering and complaining about their conditions of services of which GNAT executives are just enjoying their dues.

According to the statement, the teachers have been complaining about their salary arrears as a result of the three months pay policy but GNAT leadership are just there enjoying the dues of the teachers without thinking about them (teachers).

“Despite the numerous corruption activities by GNAT, they have gone ahead to waste Ghc120,000 on a printed magazine which is of no use to the classroom teacher.

“…even after wasting that huge sum of money on it, the magazine has been thrown away by GNAT leadership because they said there are mistakes in it,” the statement asserted.

Meanwhile, it pointed out that GNAT leadership only shared a 2Gb, 8Mb pen derives to the teachers that paid the dues.

It disclosed that a total of 80,000 copies of the magazine printed by GNAT at a cost of Ghc120,000 with the monthly deduction from the teachers meagre salaries have been shredded.

The statement indicated that the GNAT executives’ official reason on the magazines was that, it contained errors.

“But sources say it had to do with the publication of a speech by the then National President of GNAT, Mr. Paul Agyei Boakye, which mentioned issues of corruption within the leadership of the association and he had promised to eliminate it.

“But because the leadership of GNAT don’t want anybody to know about their corrupt practices, they have thrown those magazines that talk about their corrupt practices away at the expense of the classroom teacher’s dues because it is not their money,” it revealed.

The statement alluded to the fact that the production of the magazines was superintended by Mr. Peter Korda, the head of Public Relations at GNAT.

The newly appointed General Secretary of GNAT, Mr. David Ofori Acheampong, is blaming the editorial team for causing the waste.

“But we the teachers in the classroom will not stay aloof to allow the Ag. President, the General Secretary and the other leaders of GNAT to sit in the comfort of their offices and cars and misuse our money just like that,” it noted.
