GJA Opens Nominations For National & Regional Elections

GHANA Journalists Association (GJA) has fixed Friday, March 31, 2017 to hold for persons vying for national and regional executive positions.

Positions to be contested include President, Vice President, General Secretary, Organising Secretary, Treasurer, Public Affairs Officer and Corporate-Member Representative.

Nominations for the above positions opened yesterday and will close on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 5:00 pm.

A statement signed by the Chairman of the Election Committee, Ben Assorow, explained that in accordance with Article 47 of the GJA Constitution on General Election Requirements; only members in good standing shall have the right to vote. Affiliates, students and honourary members are not qualified to vote or contest any national executive position.”

“In accordance with Article 47, candidates vying for national executive positions shall be full members of the Association for at least five years and must be in good standing at least 90 days before the elections.

…Two members in good standing, both of whom shall not come from the same media organisation, shall endorse the nomination’s papers of a candidate,” the statement added.

The statement noted that any member with a criminal record involving fraud, stealing or dishonesty, is disqualified from contesting any elected position in the Association.

Fees for the various positions, the statement disclosed were: President-Gh¢1000, Vice President and General Secretary-Gh¢800, Organising Secretary, Treasurer, Public Affairs Officer and Corporate Member Representative-Gh¢500 each.

The nomination fee for the regional branch chairpersons has also been pegged at GH¢500.00 and all other regional branch executive positions of the Association will attract GH¢300.00.

The statement also announced the following as the Election Committee members for the upcoming election.

They are Benedict Assorow, Ghana’s immediate past Director of Communications, Symposium of Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) as Chairman; Mr. Kawa Kpodo, Reuters Correspondent in Ghana and; Mr. Osei Kojo, Senior Lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism and Mrs. Sylvia Annor of the Electoral Commission (EC) as Technical Advisor.
