The Mexican Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Maria De Los Angeles Arriola Aguirre, has called for a closer collaboration between Ghana and Mexico in order to foster bilateral trade and commerce between the two countries.

Ms Aguirre said both countries had a lot in common and such a collaboration would enable them to share their rich experiences and become strong strategic partners.

For instance, Ghana was known for its peacekeeping support operations worldwide, while Mexico was considering sending troops on such missions for the first time.

For that reason, Ms Aguirre said a team of military officers were schedule to visit and learn from Ghana’s peacekeeping experience.

She made the call when she paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Defence, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, in Accra yesterday.

Bilateral relations

She said although Mexico was the first country to open an embassy in Ghana, it had to close it due to certain circumstances and re-opened in the later part of 2015, saying Mexico had since been trying to forge bilateral cooperation in many areas of strategic importance.

Established peace

She said already the country had established peace keeping training centres in Mexico and were trying to collaborate with countries that were already participating in peacekeeping operations to learn from them.

Ms Aguirre said being the 13th most strongest economy in the world, Mexico could share its experiences with other countries across the globe, including Ghana.

Peacekeeping operations

For his part, Mr Nitiwul also paid glowing tribute to Ghana’s peacekeeping achievements, saying other ambassadors had expressed interest in similar collaborations.

The defence minister gave an assurance that the country was always ready and willing to share her rich experiences in peacekeeping operations worldwide.

“Ghana was lucky to be an oasis of peace and has exported that to other parts of Africa to enable them to learn from our democratic dispensation.

He said Ghana had a common challenge with Mexico in terms of Marine control and protection and that such a collaboration could help Ghana to tap into Mexico’s rich experience in that area.

The minister indicated that apart from the military cooperation, Ghana and Mexico could also explore areas such as telecommunications for their mutual benefits.
