Ghana Government Pays GH¢1.7m to Old Black Stars Players

Ghana Government has presented a cheque of GH¢ 1.7m to the Black Stars squads that won the African Cup of Nations trophy in 1963, 65, 78 & 82 respectively.
This was in fulfillment of a pledge made by President John Dramani Mahama to the old Black Stars players at a farewell dinner for the current Black Stars team before the 2014 World Cup to pay them all arrears due them.
The ceremony, which took place at the office of the Minister of Youth and Sports was attended by Rev. Osei Kofi of the 1965 Black Stars squad, former African footballer of the year and Weder Bremen star man, Abrahim Sunday and other old players of the Black Stars.
This news will come as a major relief to the old players as most of them have been struggling with life after their retirement from both club and international football.
Ghana won the 1963 AFCON qualifiers after they beat Sudan 3 – 0 in Accra courtesy an Aggrey-Fynn and Edward Acquah brace.
The Stars retained the title in 1965 when a squad comprising of Rev. Osei Kofi and Ben Acheampong beat hosts Tunisia 3 – 2 in extra time.
The Stars won their third title in 1978 after they beat Uganda 2 – 0 courtesy goals from Abdul Razak and Opoku Nti in Kumasi.
Ghana won its fourth championship in 1982 after they beat Libya on penalty kicks 7−6 after a 1−1 draw.
