The Chilean Head of Mission in Ghana, Mr Ricardo Alen, has said Ghana and Chile are making efforts to build a relationship that will benefit both countries commercially.

He said Chile was already in partnership with other 64 countries.

Mr Alen made this statement when he paid a courtesy call on the Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Ransford Tetteh, to brief him about his country’s National Day celebration, which falls tomorrow, Sunday, September 18.

Mr Alen said Chile, being in Ghana for the past three years as a resident embassy, was the only Chilean Embassy in West Africa.

According to him, a number of Chileans were working in Ghana because of the partnership between the Ministry of Trade and Chile.

“The investors come into the country annually to engage in businesses which also contribute to the development of the country,” he said.

As an exporter of copper, wine and fruits into the country, he said Chile also engaged in the exportation of machinery for mining.

He, however, stated that damages by miners to water bodies in Chile were limited as compared to Ghana.

Mr Alen said observers from the Joint Peacekeeping Operations Centre (JPOC) in Chile were expected to be in Ghana by October.

Comparing the operation of the media in the two countries, Mr Alen observed that Ghana and Chile had similar free media landscapes which defined the strong democracy of the two countries, adding that democracy would never exist without free press.

Touching on Ghana’s cooperation in the field of education, Mr Alen said efforts were made to add Ghana to the scholarship scheme for the postgraduate programme of which South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique were already part.

Mr Tetteh thanked Mr Alen for the visit and assured him of his support as Chile celebrated its anniversary.
