Reports that former President Mahama will re-run for presidency in 2020 might turn out to be an unfounded rumour after all as members of his family have said the contrary. According to the family of the former President, Mahama won’t return in 2020, because he has given enough to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and needs to take a bow from local politics.

Mahama himself has been reported by some sources, to have declined from contesting for Presidency in year 2020.

The above reports however, contradict calls by some leading figures in the NDC, that the former President will vie for presidency a second time in year 2020.

Among such NDC figures was Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuije, who in an interview on Starr 103 FM said that Mahama will be “forced” by party members to stage a comeback, because he remains the best option for the party. More so, it can be recalled that NDC’s 2016 campaign co-ordinator, Mr. Kofi Adams on Asempa FM, said the former President will fly the party’s flag in 2020, adding he will mobilize people to stand against Mahama’s decision to resist a comeback.

But Speaking to the press ahead of the swearing-in of President Nana Akufo- Addo, Mahama’s younger brother, Mr Ibrahim Mahama said the former President’s family have been advising him against a comeback. Ibrahim Mahama who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, added that Mahama has given his all to Ghana and it is only fair enough to let him rest.

John Mahama has also given indications on several occasions that he will be focusing his energies, in the years ahead, on the international arena.
