The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Asiedu Nketia, has stated that the defeat suffered by the party in last year’s presidential and parliamentary elections is an indication of a deepening democracy in Ghana.

“Leaving power is part of democracy,” he said Wednesday on Morning Starr.

Following its defeat in last year’s polls to the now governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), the NDC has instituted a 13-member committee to investigate the party’s woeful performance.

The committee is chaired by former finance Minister, Professor Kwesi Botchway.

President John Mahama who led the NDC into the polls lost by some 1.5 million votes to the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo, who was contesting the presidency for the third consecutive time.

The NDC was also significantly beaten in the parliamentary contest losing majority of their safe seats to the elephant family.

Commenting on the NDC’s appalling performance in the elections, Mr. Nketia said every member of the party bears responsibility with regards to the outcome of the elections.

“….However, the weight of responsibility differs from person to person,” he explained.

Touching on the numerous accusations of negligence that rocked the party following the defeat, he said “You can’t do anything when people accuse particular people when a party is defeated after an elections.”

“There are many who will accept their mistakes and mention where they went wrong after elections as stakeholders. There is another group who will not accept their mistakes but rather shift blames on others,” he added.
