Disgraced Charlotte Osei, Other EC Commissioners Must Resign

A Professor of law, Prof Stephen Kwaku Asare has called on Ghanaians to demand the resignation of the team of commissioners at the Electoral Commission (EC) led by Charlotte Osei after the 2016 elections.

The reason, Prof Kwaku Azar as he is popularly called, told listeners of Adom FM’s Midday News on Monday, is as a result of the ‘disgrace’ the commissioners have brought upon themselves and the commission.

The Supreme Court ordered the EC to extend the nomination period for political parties till close of work tomorrow, 8th November, 2016.

The Apex Court also tasked the EC to invite all disqualified aspirants and afford them the chance to make necessary corrections.

The ruling which was a unanimous decision by the 7-panel members presided over by Justice Sophia Adinyira followed the EC dragging the PPP to court to seek interpretation of a High Court ruling that the PPP should be allowed to correct errors on its nomination forms.

This ruling, Kwaku Azar said is a sign of incompetence displayed by the EC and the team of commissioners and hence the need for them to resign.

“I’m not shocked at the outcome, only surprised that the EC could not go according to its own rules…I think the commissioners but for time constraints should have humbly resigned…they should know that they have brought serious disgrace upon themselves,” he said.

He further argued that the Commissioners have not only brought disgrace upon themselves but also upon the Election Management Body (EMB).

“The commissioners have brought disgrace upon themselves and the commission and we must all help the EC get back its image after the elections…,” he said.

The actions, he said should be taken after they have been supported to organize the elections which is a month away.

“We should ask her to resign after organizing the elections because she can’t hold the whole country in suspense this long again…,” he added.
