It was the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Johnson Asiama that made this disclosure while speaking at the 4th Edition of the AB & David Crystal Ball Africa 2017 in Accra.

According to Dr. Asiama, the new cedi note will be unveiled on March 4th and will be available for general public use by the end of the month. He also noted that the new note would be left to be in circulation with the existing GHC5 note as a legal tender and also as a collector’s item.

The GHc5 underwent an almost complete change. On the obverse of the note, the “big six” were replaced with the image of James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, a Ghanaian missionary and educationist who contributed a lot to education and women empowerment in the Gold Coast. During his lifetime, Mr. Aggrey so much encouraged the education of women, supporting his stance with various truth-filled quotes. Among the very popular ones which have stood the test of time are:

The surest way to keep people down is to educate the men and neglect the women.

If you educate a man you simply educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation.

The big six on their own part, were six Ghanaian nationalists who played significant roles in earning independence for the country. They all belonged to the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), the leading political party in the British colony of the Gold Coast and include, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Kwame Nkrumah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, William Ofori Atta.

On the reverse, The Balme Library of The University of Ghana was replaced by FPSO Kwame Nkrumah, representing oil which is Ghana’s current major source of revenue. Cocoa was also pictured which on its part has been an ancient source of revenue.

In addition, some security features were added to the new cedi note to protect it from counterfeiting. Qualities that will aid the visually impaired to recognize the note were also put in place.

This however, is not the first time the GHc5 note is being given a new look. The looks has been previously changed on four different occasions – 1965, 1967, 1979 and 2007, alongside other denominations.
