“Professor” Azumah Nelson has backed incumbent Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) President Peter Zwennes for another term. The Association go to the polls March next year and many boxing fans want Zwennes to stay and continue his good work, which others are not seeing.
According to the three-time world boxing champion and International Hall of Fame Inductee, Peter Zwennes is doing a great job and I’m supporting him for another term. I can see he is doing his best, because we have had a lot of GBA Presidents but this man is very serious with his work.”
“Most of the boxers currently are ungrateful and lazy. Because of that you can’t see the good work being done by Peter Zwennes. But if they give him another chance I think he will perform better. I wish that we get world champions in the coming years,” he said.
Zwennes was elected into office in 2013 after he polled 56 votes against hot favorite, Henry Manly-Spain who had 35. The lawyer and old boy of St. Augustine’s College has brought discipline and some respect to Boxing in Ghana and his reign has seen the construction of the Boxing Arena which he personally pressed the sports authorities that Ghana needs a place exclusively for boxing.
During his tenure of office Ghana has had the chance of getting a world boxing champion with Emmanuel Tagoe, the Game Boy ready to make history for Ghana and Africa with the IBO Lightweight title. He already holds the WBO International title, Richard Commey came close to winning the IBF Lightweight title over tall American dream Robert Easter Jr, but Isaac Dogboe has got the confidence to claim the WBC Youth Bantamweight title in addition to his WBO Africa title.
