Black Stars Captain and current Al Ahli striker, Asamoah Gyan has revealed how much challenges recurrent injuries has been causing him in recent time. Asamoah Gyan’s injuries became glaringly frustrating since 2015, making him to be on and off the pitch in recent seasons. This, the Black Stars skipper says, had made him consider hanging his boots for good.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Hot Fm, the former Sunderland striker revealed that his frustrations had heightened to the extent that his woman asked him to call it a good day with his career.

“I was a bit frustrated to the extent that the woman asked me to quit,” he said.

Continuing, Gyan revealed that it took some “mental toughness” to hold out amidst the injury challenges. He said his nature as a “fighter” helped him to throw off the thoughts of retirement and persist in his career despite all odd; adding that he can still play for many years.

“It was a huge challenge but I’m glad I’m a fighter and keeps fighting. I am sure I can play for many years,” he added.

Gyan concluded by saying that football needs dedication and passion, and with the two, “you can rise above the storm no matter the difficulties”.

It is not an overstatement to say that Asamoah Gyan’s injuries in recent times have really made the all time Ghana’s top scorer a shadow of himself. In 2016, the 31-year-old striker sealed a mega move from UAE side Al Ain to Chinese club Shanghai SIPG, becoming the sixth highest paid player in the world at that time. Unfortunately, injuries crippled his chances in the Chinese Super League, where he made only 20 appearances and scored seven goals in two seasons.

Gyan’s poor performances at the Chinese side saw him taken back to the UAE Side on loan by Dubai-based Al-Ahli. He has since scored just four goals in 11 outings, a sharp contrast to the highly celebrated player who scored over 80 goals for Al Ain in a four year star-studded deal!

The Black Stars skipper who also got injured during the last African Cup of Nations tournament, was restricted to only two appearances for the national team throughout 2016, scoring just a goal for the Black Stars in almost two years. His AFCON injury had gotten all Ghanaian football lovers on edge during the 2017 AFCON in which Ghana finished fourth place.

Nevertheless, the Ghanaian striker has refused to give up on himself, and hopes that fans will patiently afford him an opportunity to prove himself more before it is time for him to finally throw in the towel.
