Andre Ayew Plays Down Importance of Egypt Clash

Stand-in captain of the Black Stars Andre Ayew has called for calm ahead of the Ghana’s clash against Egypt saying the game is not a “must win” while admitting the Egypt will come in strongly.

Ghana is seeking a fourth consecutive appearance at the World Cup after dismissing Egypt on route to their third in the 2014 edition hosted by Brazil.

Should the Avram Grant led side have a chance of making it to the tournament, they must find a win against Egypt on November 13 after failing to do so against Uganda in Tamale on match day one.

Ayew says his teammates are ready to pounce on the Pharaohs but he does not think the game will decide Ghana’s fate in the qualification round.

“Must is a big word, whether we like it or not we have four games after this one (against Egypt). This game is a very important one but it’s not the decider.” said the West Ham forward.

“What is important is that we go, play our football and leave Egypt with something. We have the players and the quality.

“We are asking Ghanaians to pray for us because we need their prayers and support to succeed with our family and friends behind us.

Ghana handed Egypt a heavy defeat in the build up to the 2014 World Cup as the Pharaohs embarrassingly walked away from Kumasi with a 6-1 drubbing, a result the Egyptians have been looking to revenge; which sets up the game in Alexandria for a tense atmosphere.

Asked about whether Ghana is braced for a revenge mentality from the all time leading African Champions, the self-asserting Ayew said, “I don’t think we have anything to prove to anybody. What we have to do is to prove something to ourselves and to our supporters.”

“The last time we played them we beat in the World Cup Qualifier and went through. We know they are taking this game personally. We will try and have a result but we have nothing to prove to Egypt.”
