The Accra Metropolitan Security Committee (METSEC), which gave the directive, said this has become necessary to ensure peace in the country ahead of the December 7 polls.

Political parties have been asked to immediately suspend all political activities in the metropolis following recent clashes between the governing National Democratic Congress and the opposition New Patriotic Party.

The directives were given at an emergency security meeting by METSEC in Accra, chaired by Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije.

Following the directive, all political parties are required to submit their activities and programmes to the District Electoral Taskforces through their Local Police Command and the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee for clearance.

Supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed in the Odododiodioo constituency in Accra last Tuesday night.

Reports say the fight occurred at the end of two separate campaign rallies held by the two parties.

Several people from both sides were severely injured following the clash.

The two parties clashed again on Sunday in front of Nana Akufo-Addo’s Nima residence when the NDC were having a health walk.

It is, however, unclear what triggered the clashes but according to reports, both sides confirmed gunshots and hurling of harmful objects.

The NPP’s acting General Secretary, John Boadu at a press conference hours after the incident accused the NDC of attacking their supporters with guns, knives and other harmful objects.

The NDC has since denied the claims saying it was the personal security of Nana Addo who first fired multiple shots at the NDC members.

Commenting on the matter, the public relations officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo said METSEC had directed the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee to be actively involved in the education, sensitisation and engagement of party activities to ensure such clashes do not recur.

At the end of the METSEC meeting, members arrived at a resolution that: “The Metro Police Commander will enforce all the laws on electoral offences to the letter to ensure peace, protection of lives and property.”
