The Security Committee of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has suspended all parliamentary debates organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in all thirteen constituencies in the metropolis.
A resolution signed by the Metro Co-ordinating Director, Sam Ayeh-Datey for the Metro Chief Executive said the decision will quell recent upheavals marking such events.
“In light of the recent upheavals, METSEC has directed the immediate suspension of all parliamentary political debates being organized by the NCCE in all thirteen(13) constituency in the Accra metropolis” the statement said. According to METSEC, it will engage the Police Commander to enforce this resolution to ensure “peace, protection of lives and property.”
A recent parliamentary debate organized by the NCCE at the Weija-Gbawe constituency was disrupted due to misunderstanding between the NCCE and CODEO, two Civil Society Organizations CSOs responsible for organizing the event.
As momentum builds towards the December polls, political rallies particularly in the Greater Accra Region have been marked by violent clashes between supporters and heated verbal exchanges between aspirants.
The most recent one occurred at Odododiodio constituency where three persons were reported to have undergone surgery at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates of the constituency clashed on Tuesday night
Per the resolution, all District Electoral Taskforces are to be “actively” involved “in all political activities at all the thirteen (13) constituency in Accra.
The Metropolitan Security Committee METSEC is recommending the submission of political party programmes to the District Electoral Taskforce through their Local Police Command with copies given to the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee.
