After 8 Years and GHC248bn, One Interchange Is Not Enough

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticized government for what he says is an attempt to deceive Ghanaians with an interchange in spite of its poor performance in managing the economy.

Dr Muhamadu Bawumia said one interchange cannot be good enough a record to celebrate considering the vast resources at its disposal.

Speaking to students at the St. John Bosco College of Education in Navrongo in the Upper East Region on Thursday, he questioned how with GHC248 billion at its disposal, the President John Mahama government has collapsed the economy.

The President John Mahama last week officially opened the newly constructed Kwame Nkrumah Interchange amidst pomp and pageantry and called on Ghanaians to renew his mandate for more of such projects.

“They have created unemployment, hardship and today they want us to be happy because they have built an interchange at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

“How does that impact on the teacher training allowance that they have cancelled? With GHC248 billion, they have been able to build one interchange in eight years. With only GHC20 billion, the NPP built eight interchanges in eight years,” the former Deputy Governer of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) said.

Stressing on the party’s change agenda, he said they are not impressed as the newly built interchange cost ten times more than the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange also in Accra built by erstwhile President John Agyekum Kufour.

But Deputy Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu rejects this Speaking on Joy FM/JOYNEWS’ new analysis program Newsfile Saturday he stated that any attempts by anyone to downplay the significance of the interchange will not succeed.
