Special Voting Different From Dec 7 Voting To A Large Extent – EC PRO

The Head of Communications at the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, has calmed nerves by stating that the seeming problems with the Special Voting regarding “missing names” will not occur on December 7, 2016.

He dismissed description of security officers not finding their names in the Special Voting list as “missing names”, pointing out that their names will be found in the register on election day Wednesday.

“Today’s exercise is completely different from what is going to happen on 7th December,” Mr Dzakpasu said in an interview on 3FM on Sunday.

He said most security officers had not applied to have their names on the Special Voting list. Others still, he added, may have sent their applications with mistakes.

He said some have also gone outside their constituencies of registration to vote.

“[On December 7] all voters know their constituencies,” he stressed.

“We are not expecting voters to carry their cards and go outside their constituencies,” he added.

Though many watchers have described the Special Voting as a foretaste of what will be witnessed on Wednesday during the general elections, Mr Dzakpasu disagreed.

“The two, to a large extent, are different in form,” he pointed out.

“What happened today [Sunday] cannot occur on the 7th of December.”

The Special Voting exercise – meant for security officers, electoral officers as well as journalists who will work on D-day – was fraught with many voters not finding their names on Thursday, December 1.

This prompted an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) a few hours after polls closed.

A consensus was reached for a second day to be devoted for a continuation of the exercise.

But Sunday seems to have witnessed the same problems that plagued the December 1 exercise.
