Barring any last minute glitches, Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) would conduct the balloting for presidential candidates by Thursday November 10, 2016.
This was disclosed by the Head of Communications of the Electoral Commission, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu who indicated that if all things go according to plan the various political party representatives would be called in for the balloting.
The EC has already balloted positions for parliamentary candidates. The balloting for the presidential slots could not be done due to the numerous court cases involving the Electoral Commission.
Whereas many thought the ruling by the Supreme Court would bring finality to all the court cases hanging around the neck of the EC and political parties, there has been a new twist to events with the parties now running helter-skelter not only to meet the new deadline, but to produce some of the subscribers who endorsed their forms.
Aside that, the anomalies pointed out to them by the EC have jumped up – in some cases over 100% of the earlier mistakes pointed out to parties before the disqualification.
Some of the parties including the NDP and the PPP are already threatening further legal action if they detect a deliberate attempt by the EC to keep them disqualified.
Ghana goes to the polls on December 7 but the many legal tussles seem to have raised doubts on the feasibility of the date.
