TUTAG Begins Sit-Down Strike

Members of the Technical Universities Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) have begun a nationwide sit-down strike over demands for amendments to the Technical Universities Act of 2016, Act 922.

According to them, four critical sections of the Act need urgent amendments.

Speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Friday, General Secretary of TUTAG David Kwaku Brown said Friday’s action is expected to be brought to an end on Wednesday after which they will decide on the next line of action.

According to him, there has been no word from government over their demands, which means they will unleash a full-scale strike after Wednesday unless government does intervene.

Among the “critical issues” TUTAG is seeking amendments to is Section 24, which demands that technical universities report to the National Council for Technical Education.

Section 27, which stipulates that all the technical universities operate with harmonized statutes, is also another constitutional text they want amended.

Mr Brown complained government appears to connive at their demands for amendments to Act 922.

The Act was passed in 2016.
