Residents of Krowor, Ledzokuku, La, Nungua, Teshie and its environs have rescinded an earlier decision to embark on a seven-day continuous demonstration against the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

The residents threatened to demonstrate as a result of the shutdown of the Accra Desalination Plant located at Teshie.

Alternative arrangements were put in place – on Wednesdays and weekends – to serve consumers.

But after the threat was issued, management of the Ghana  Water Company Limited through Public Relations Officer Stanley Martey held a consultative assembly meeting with some members of the community at the offices of the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly.

According to residents, the meeting held last Monday revealed “startling financial challenges as at the time of the suspension of supply of water”.

According to the Nungua-Teshie-Labadi Residents Coalition (NUTELARC), the “facts and figures” laid before members by the Water Company demanded imperative efforts to have residents conserve water, pay their bills and desist from engaging in illegal connections.

“This is also to buttress the microscopic research stating the likelihood of Ghana importing water by 2030 if measures are not put in place to curb negative practices polluting the country’s water bodies,”  NUTELARC Spokesperson Gideon Tettey Tetteh stated.

The communities have, above all, resolved to embark on a water conservation exercise – in collaboration with GWCL.

A collaborative committee will be set up to spearhead this.

“We also recommend that a more elaborate timetable for the weekly supply should be discussed and published for residents to know the actual days for the supply of water,” Mr Tetteh said, adding that a supplementary arrangement also has to be made for water tankers to supply at subsidized prices.
