Captain Mahama was lynched on suspicion that he was an armed robber, after a group of residents from whom he asked for directions during a Monday dawn jogging session spotted a pistol on him.

He was the commander of a military detachment to Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region for a mission sanctioned by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Police have indicated that they are confident of a successful investigation to bring the perpetrators to book and warned “all persons who played roles in the murder to surrender to the nearest police station”.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, which was released on Wednesday, May 31.

The statement explained that the assemblyman in the areas had been arrested together with five other suspects to aid investigations.

“Presently, police are keeping six suspects related to the murder of Captain Mahama in custody. They are William Baah (the assemblyman of Denkyira Obuasi), Bismark Donkor, Philip Badu, Kofi Nyame, Anthony Amoah, and Kofi Badu,” the release indicated.

It further explained that the police administration had dispatched a specialist team comprising the homicide squad, crime scene management, and action units from the headquarters in Accra to Denkyira Obuasi “to, among others, gather further evidence and intelligence regarding the murder of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama on Monday 29th May, 2017”.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu, has expressed condolence to the bereaved family.
