The project is to complement government’s efforts towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goal 6 on sanitation by 2030 of ensuring sustainable management of sanitation for all.

Ghana failed to meet its Millennium Development Goal target on Sanitation as at the end of 2015.

The country managed to attain less than 20 percent sanitation coverage instead of the 54 percent coverage target.

Most residents continue to liter indiscriminately in their communities which ends up choking gutters and causing flood whenever it rains.

The insanitary condition in communities also results in health implications such as cholera, diarrhea, and malaria among other sanitation-related diseases.

It is to help improve sanitation in some selected communities within the Ashanti region that the Ghana Youth Climate Coalition launched the initiative to promote zero waste in Kumasi.

The project will include public education on the need to maintain a clean environment, placement of liter bins at vantage points in the selected communities, and regular community clean up exercise.

The Founding director of Ghana Youth Climate Coalition, Jamal Musah said achieving zero waste in communities is possible as the project will first tackle attitudinal change.

He said they will also be training and building the capacity of interested community members on how to turn waste into cash.

The Ashanti Regional Manager of Zoomlion, Kofi Sekyere Boateng said the initiative is laudable because of the alarming rate of poor sanitation in some communities.

He advised the public to desist from indiscriminate littering and urged all and sundry to play a role in maintaining a clean environment.
