Following Citi News’ report on a young lady with hunchback who had to lay prostrate to write her Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), a Philanthropist and a Physiotherapist, has pledged to bear the cost of the preliminary tests towards her treatment.
Mr. Beke K Ekpe, who works with FOCOS Hospital, a Ghanaian owned health facility that provides quality orthopedic care to patients in under-served communities, expressed his interest to support young Bernice Ekpe by footing the bills for her consultancy, diagnosis and other preliminaries.
Bernice Ekpe is one of the candidates writing the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
She started developing the hunchback at age six, and has since been suffering pains in her spine. Although the condition has delayed the education of the 20 year old pupil, her strong will to become a nurse in future could not have allowed her to give up on herself.
She was seen in the exams hall in Adaklu lying on a student mattress to write her papers.
According to the Physiotherapist, the preliminaries which would cost him GHC2,500, would assist in finding a solution to her problem.
Mr Beke Ekpe said although he is not related to the young lady biologically, he believed the intervention through his widow’s mite would help improve the condition of the brilliant but vulnerable child.
“I believe after the preliminaries, we would know how much it would cost to conduct a major surgery on her and see how we can get further support to improve her condition. She is very determined and we need to support her.”
Meanwhile, the mother of the young lady, Madam Victoria Segbefia, is pleading with all well-meaning individuals and benevolent institutions to assist in the treatment of the daughter’s condition.
